Brain and Vision Awareness Month: Why Vision Is More Than 20/20

March is Brain and Vision Awareness Month, a time to highlight the important connection between the brain and the visual system. While many people think vision is simply about seeing clearly, vision is actually a complex process that involves both the eyes and the brain working together. Your eyes gather visual information from the world around you, but it is the brain that interprets and gives meaning to what you see. In fact, more than half of the brain’s pathways are involved in processing visual information. This is why someone can have 20/20 eyesight and still experience vision-related challenges. Standard vision screenings often measure clarity of sight, but they do not always assess how efficiently the brain and eyes are working together.

When the visual system isn’t functioning well, individuals may experience symptoms such as:

  • Losing place while reading
  • Skipping or rereading lines
  • Headaches or eye strain
  • Difficulty copying from a board or screen
  • Poor reading comprehension
  • Avoiding reading or close work

A developmental vision evaluation looks beyond eyesight to assess how well the eyes and brain are working together. If challenges are identified, vision therapy may be recommended to strengthen visual skills such as eye tracking, focusing, and eye coordination.

During Brain and Vision Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that vision is about more than what you see on an eye chart β€” it’s about how efficiently your brain processes the information your eyes provide. At The Vision Development Team, we are dedicated to helping patients build stronger visual skills so they can read, learn, and perform daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.
